A Community Relations Specialist, Nathaniel Jonah, has said Ghana's rich gold history has shaped the nation's destiny, fueling trade, wealth, and development.

Speaking to an Accra based journalist, Nii Marmah Boye, Jonah, with over 17 years of experience in the mining industry, however, noted the industry's dark side, including environmental degradation and illegal mining, had raised great concerns.

"Ghana's gold industry is a double-edged sword. While it contributes significantly to the economy, it also poses serious environmental and social challenges," Jonah said.

The gold mining sector is a huge contributor to Ghana's economy, providing income, jobs, and infrastructure. However, illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, has devastating consequences, including environmental damage, deforestation, and pollution of water bodies.

"The government must take a strong stance against illegal mining, this includes stricter enforcement of regulations, providing alternative livelihoods for communities, and promoting sustainable mining practices," Jonah added.

To address the challenges facing the industry, Ghana must adopt a balanced approach that prioritises environmental protection, community engagement, and responsible mining practices.

"Gold can be a blessing for Ghana, but it requires responsible management," he further noted.

"By prioritising sustainability and community involvement, we can ensure that the industry benefits both the economy and the environment."
