MFWA and PRINPAG to launch Code of Ethics for news publishers
The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), in collaboration with the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), is set to launch a Code of Ethics to guide the work of PRINPAG members.
The launch will take place on Thursday, October 17, 2024, in Accra.
This initiative is part of MFWA’s broader efforts under the DW Akademie-funded project titled Promoting Fact-Based and Critical Reporting in Ghana’s Electioneering Processes through Public Interest and Accountability. The project aims to foster fact-based and responsible journalism as Ghana prepares for its general elections in December 2024.
The event will gather key stakeholders, including journalists, editors, civil society organizations, media associations, regulatory bodies, and members of the donor community, to discuss the role of ethical journalism in promoting democracy.
The Executive Secretary of the National Media Commission (NMC), Mr. George Sarpong, will officially launch the Code of Ethics.
The updated Code of Ethics, aligned with modern media standards, now extends its scope to include online publishers who are members of PRINPAG.
As Ghana heads into the 2024 elections, the need for accurate, fair, and fact-based reporting is more critical than ever, particularly with the rise of online platforms and citizen journalism.
While online media offers numerous opportunities, it also presents challenges such as misinformation, disinformation, and sensationalism.
PRINPAG’s Code of Ethics provides essential guidelines to promote professionalism, accuracy, and objectivity in the work of journalists and news publishers.
Jeorge Wilson Kingson, Executive Secretary of PRINPAG, emphasized the importance of the Code of Ethics, stating, “The media’s responsibility in this critical election year cannot be overstated.
Our updated Code of Ethics aims to ensure that journalists remain committed to truth, transparency, and professionalism, which are essential for peaceful and credible elections.
This launch marks a new chapter in strengthening the role of private newspapers and online news publishers in promoting ethical journalism.”
As part of the launch, a forum will be held to highlight the significance of ethical journalism in the lead-up to the elections.
The forum will serve as a platform for sharing best practices in fact-checking, critical reporting, and ensuring that journalists adhere to the highest standards of professionalism in their work.
