Kinbu Sectech to be revamped – Mayor

News
The mayor of Accra has said there are plans to develop the Kinbu Senior High Technical School to befit the status of a modern technical training school in heart of the capital city.

According to Mr Mohammed Adjei Sowah, the Assembly is working closely with the Metro Director of Education and the Headmistress of the school to present a master plan that would improve the physical condition of the school and create a conducive atmosphere for learning for decades to come.

Mr Adjei Sowah said this on Friday at the launch of the 145th anniversary of Kinbu Senior High Technical School on the theme: “The Kinbu Story”.

“This is the only and proper technical school in the city and if not maintained and protected, will lose its status and produce more students who would venture into humanities at the tertiary level," he said.

He pointed out that President Nana Akufo-Addo is very much interested in technical and vocational education, hence his belief in the German model of technical education, and directive to all the Assemblies to actively support vocational and technical schools in their jurisdiction.

The mayor observed that the government is developing infrastructure in the various schools and also awarded contracts for the provision of additional facilities in many senior high schools including Kinbu Senior High to absorb the expected increase in enrolment due to the implementation of the free senior high school programme.

To reciprocate the gesture by the management of the school to give out a parcel of land for the construction of a city hall, Mr Adjei Sowah said the Assembly, during the construction works, decided to maintain its frontage as the Kinbu Gardens to serve as a leisure area for the people of Accra.

The AMA boss also gave the assurance that his office, in collaboration with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, would soon evict all squatters who have taken over the school's land.

The Headmistress of the school, Gloria Adukonu, in a remark, stressed the need for more infrastructural development in the school to accommodate the current student population of 1,990.

The Director in charge of Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education, Catherine Appiah-Pinkrah, in a speech read on behalf of the Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, said the government is committed to ensuring that every child gets access to free quality education from the kindergarten to the senior high school level.

“The government is poised to ensure that teachers are given the necessary tools, motivation and supervision to enhance quality teaching and learning,” he said.

She thanked both the past and current leaders of the school for their hard work in ensuring the existence of the school and producing prominent people in the country.

She said the theme for the 145th anniversary was “appropriate and worth celebrating because the Kinbu Senior High Technical School has produced many great statesmen and women in academia, politics and other spheres of life,” she said.

The launch ended with the unveiling of the 145th-anniversary cloth and the 6th speech and Prize-giving Day scheduled for 15 November 2019.

Other activities lined up for the anniversary include a mentorship programme for the students by the Kinbu Old Students Association (KOSA), a homecoming event on 25 October, a float through some principal streets of Accra on 8 October and a grand durbar on 15 November 2019.
