GA/R: Tema Newtown sex workers complain of police extortion and harassment

News
Sex is work

Numerous sex workers in Tema Newtown, located in the Greater Accra Region, are expressing distress over the treatment they are receiving from the local police.

These sex workers claim that the police in the port city are actively targeting them to drive them out of business, asserting that their profession is deemed illegal.

The disgruntled sex workers alleged that, despite previous patronage of their services by the police and some members of the Navy during the night, law enforcement officials have now resorted to harassment and extortion.

They argue that this police action is increasingly impeding their ability to engage in their profession in the area.

The sex workers poured out their frustrations with the police in recent times while speaking on Accra 100.5 FM’s 6:00 am news on Wednesday October 11, 2023.

According to the sex workers, prostitution has been a part of society since time immemorial, and they question why authorities are now trying to curtail their livelihood.

They contend that their income from this profession is crucial for supporting their families, particularly their children.

One of the prominent sex workers from Tema Newtown otherwise known as Tema Newtown sex queen, in an interview, noted that many of the women had taken loans from banks and are struggling to repay them.

"Engaging in sex work has become a means to service some of these outstanding loans," she stressed.

She bemoaned why the police are bent on getting them out of business.
