Ghana’s Minister of Energy, John Jinapor, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy portfolio to meet its growing energy demands.

He emphasized the government’s strategic focus on solar, wind, and mini-hydro projects as part of efforts to achieve long-term energy sustainability.

Speaking during day 2 of the Africa Prosperity Dialogue (APD) 2025 at the Accra International Conference Centre on Friday, January 31, 2025, Mr. Jinapor set the context for a panel discussion on “Delivering Affordable, Accessible, and Sustainable Energy Solutions for Africa.”

Jinapor stressed that Ghana is determined to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and transition to a more sustainable and diversified energy mix.

"To meet the energy needs of our growing economy and ensure sustainable development, Ghana is prioritizing solar, wind, and mini-hydro projects as part of our broader energy transition plan," he stated.

He further highlighted that renewable energy adoption is key to reducing the country’s carbon footprint, improving energy access, and supporting industrialization, particularly within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The Minister underscored the importance of renewable energy in securing a reliable and affordable power supply for national development.

He noted that while Ghana has made significant progress in expanding electricity access, the country remains focused on advancing green energy solutions to position itself as a leader in Africa’s energy transition.

"Solar, wind, and mini-hydro offer immense potential for Ghana to meet its energy demands while also reducing the environmental impact of fossil fuels," Jinapor explained.

He pointed out that Ghana has abundant renewable energy resources, including favourable solar conditions, a vast coastline ideal for wind energy, and several rivers suitable for mini-hydro power generation.

As the country continues its energy transition, Jinapor assured that strategic investments in the renewable sector will drive sustainable development, create jobs, and enhance Ghana’s role in Africa’s evolving energy landscape.
