The National Peace Council (NPC) has reacted to disturbing developments in Bawku and Ejura.

“The National Peace Council (NPC) followed with regret the unfortunate incident that happened in Bawku, in the Upper East Region, where two persons were reportedly killed and at Ejura in the Ashanti Region, where a mob attacked and burned a Police Station after a suspect had reportedly died whilst in detention,” the NPC’s statement dated January 13, 2025, noted.

“The Council extends condolences to the bereaved families and entreats the people in these communities to remain calm and resort to non-violent, and peaceful means of addressing their grievance,” the NPC added.

“While calling for calm and swift action to amicably address the impasses, the Council appeals to the Ghana Police Service to exercise maximum restraint, circumspection and act with professionalism in handling these situations,” the NPC said.

The council assured “the chiefs and people of Ejura that mindful of the incident which occurred in June 2021 and the current impasse, it will, together with the Ashanti Regional Peace Council engage stakeholders in Ejura, including the youth and the police service to ensure peaceful coexistence”.

“The Council further assures the people of Bawku that it is working together with the Upper East Regional Office and other stakeholders to revive the Inter-Ethnic Peace Committee to ensure sustainable peace in the area,” the NPC statement concluded.
