Accra’s thriving 2024 vegan market: A celebration of plant-based living

The 2024 Plant-Based Vegan Market, themed “Eat Kind, Live Kind,” was a resounding success, drawing a vibrant mix of locals and diasporans to the Centre for National Culture in Accra from December 13-15, 2024. The three-day event showcased a diverse range of plant-based products, eco-friendly services, and wellness activities, all aimed at promoting healthy living, sustainability, and compassion.

Attendees explored an exciting marketplace filled with vendors offering delicious plant-based cuisine, artisanal goods, and eco-friendly products. From traditional Ghanaian vegan dishes to international plant-based delicacies, visitors sampled and purchased a wide variety of unique items.

Beyond the marketplace, the event featured thought-provoking discussions and workshops led by renowned experts covering topics such as veganism’s health benefits, climate change’s impact on food systems, nutrition and mental health, and the power of herbs and frequency. A standout moment was Lisa Marie Goodson’s heartfelt testimony, where she shared her inspiring journey into plant-based living, leaving a profound impact on attendees.

Another crowd favourite was The Vegan Hut, where visitors relaxed on traditional African stools and mats, soaking in the cultural ambience while enjoying wholesome plant-based meals and refreshments.

The event also featured interactive cooking demonstrations, educating attendees on innovative plant-based recipes, as well as Plant-Based Treaty education sessions, emphasizing the role of plant-based living in combating climate change.

As the sun set, the Night Market Fiesta came alive with live music, folk arts, and entertainment, creating a lively and unforgettable atmosphere. Attendees danced and sang along, celebrating the fusion of culture and compassionate living.

The market also hosted wellness activities, including yoga sessions, fitness workshops, and a Healthy Aging Seminar, designed to provide the elderly with valuable insights into longevity and well-being.

A major highlight was the Nathan Kwasi Adu Memorial Vegan Lectures & Awards, honouring a trailblazer in Ghana’s vegan movement and underscoring the importance of sustainability and compassion.

Nana Oheneba Ntim Barimah, a well-respected Natural Medicine Researcher & Campaigner, commended the initiative, stating:

“I am truly impressed with the Plant-Based Vegan Market. This event is a powerful tool for educating the public on the benefits of plant-based living and reducing environmental pollution. I salute the organizers for this remarkable effort.”

The overwhelming success of the event sparked calls for it to be held more frequently, with many suggesting a monthly edition. The next Plant-Based Vegan Market is already set for March 29-30, 2025, and promises to be even bigger and better.
