Stay away from our traditional matters - Damongo chiefs warn Samuel Abu Jinapor
The chiefs and people of Damongo in the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region have cautioned their Member of Parliament, Samuel Abu Jinapor, to refrain from interfering in traditional matters.
At a press conference in Damongo, Saa Wura Abukari Jaga, speaking on behalf of Damongowura Kelly Braimah Boresa Seidu, expressed concerns about the MP’s continuous involvement in issues that should be handled within traditional frameworks.
The chiefs warned that such interference has the potential to cause widespread discontent and disaffection among the people.
According to Saa Wura Abukari Jaga, Samuel Abu Jinapor is the only stakeholder in the area who has refused to recognize and acknowledge Damongowura Kelly as the legitimate Damongowura, as affirmed by Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Soale Jewu.
“His continuous interference and disregard for customs and traditions of the Gonja Kingdom have become a matter of concern since this has had serious security implications in Damongo and its environs, and equally prepares the grounds for further security threats in the future,” he stated.
The chiefs highlighted the need for traditional matters to be handled within their established frameworks, noting that the MP's actions have caused significant unrest among the people.
They urged the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), President Nana Akuffo-Addo, NPP flagbearer Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, and the Chieftaincy Minister to call Hon. Abu Jinapor to order.
“The Chiefs and people of the Damongo Traditional Area will not countenance any attempt by the Member of Parliament for Damongo to disrespect, undermine, and disregard the authority of Damongowura Kelly Seidu and compromise the security of Damongo and its environs in the process,” they cautioned.
The Damongo community has been battling chieftaincy succession disputes since 2016. However, in November of last year, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto I resolved the issue by naming Damongowura Kelly Braimah Seidu Boresa I as the legitimate Damongowura.
