Sunsum talks about mentoring 'boy-boys' Kwaku Manu and Lil Win, having Otumfuo as a fan
Ghanaian actor Sunsum, born Yaw Adu, has spoken about how his work as an actor has greatly benefitted him.
His acting talent and work over the years, he said, has earned him admiration from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Warlord of Asante, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
He spoke to Nana Romeo on Ayekoo Ayekoo, Accra 100.5 FM’s midmorning programme.
Sunsum also recalled becoming part of Kumawood long before fellow stars like Kwaku Manu and Lil Win.
He said some of his contemporaries in Kumawood were Agya Koo and Wayoosi.
“Kwaku Manu and co were ‘boy-boys’ that we would send on errands,” he said – ‘boy boy’ is a Ghanaian term for subordinates.
Sunsum said he does not like to speak about these things because people may see him as haughty.
He conceded that even though, in the movie industry, he is Kwaku Manu’s senior, Manu “has more money than me”.
“Kwaku Manu is married. He’s older than me. I respect him,” he added.
The Aboro Ne Bayie star highlighted the camaraderie between him and Manu by recounting times he would go with Manu and his wife to lodge at Manu’s mother’s house in Obuasi when they travelled to shoot movies.
“You can ask Kwaku Manu about it,” Sunsum noted, promptly adding: “Kwaku Manu came into the movie industry after me, same as Lil Win.”
“As for Lil Win, Kwaku Manu and I would often beseech the directors to engage him in the movies,” Sunsum added. “Including Dr Likee and all the squad. A lot of them.”
Sunsum reminded the audience that when he started acting he was young.
“It’s just the grace of God that has been abundant on me,” he said also.
He noted that there are actors who were once his juniors who have risen to heights and attained wealth beyond him but he makes sure not to envy them.
He added that he is content and grateful for his own blessings.
“I was in a thatch house but today I am able to eat to my satisfaction. People see me and gift me money, free of charge,” he testified.
“The shirt I am wearing was a gift from someone in the US – it’s expensive here in Ghana,” he pointed out.
“Were it not for the movies, how would this have happened?” he asked, adding: “The watch I’m wearing was brought from Dubai.”
“I never thought I’d meet the president but the president knows me,” Sunsum said.
“The Otumfuo also – he loves me,” the 29-year-old Kumawood star declared, indicating that the King of the Asante Kingdom, a fan of his, calls him ‘Ahoufe (Beautiful/Handsome)’.
