Veteran highlife singer Akosua Agyapong has picked the Greater Accra Regional Branch Chairman of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Ras Caleb Appiah Levi, as her preferred candidate for President of the union.

2019 is an election year for MUSIGA and the race to replace Bice Osei Kuffour also known as Obuor is getting competitive.

Some notable members of the organisation have started filing for the position.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Kwasi Asare on the Big Show on Class 91.3FM on Saturday, 4 May 2019, Akosua Agyapong was of the view that Ras Caleb, if elected as president of MUSIGA, will bring transformation to the music industry.

“There’s this guy, Ras Caleb, I’ve seen that what we [musicians] have in mind is what he’s also got, he’s human, I understand he has spoken but I’m praying that if he comes, all that he has said that he’ll do, he’ll implement them if elected.”

“Honestly speaking, he has what it takes to be the MUSIGA president. Ras Caleb, I’m vouching for him because honestly speaking he can do the work,” the Frema hitmaker added.

Apart from Ras Caleb, Akosua Agyapong said Rev Thomas Yawson is the best candidate to be the vice-president of MUSIGA.

She continued: “For me, I am praying for us to get a proper MUSIGA president who will actually take our problems and take welfare of the older musicians seriously. Let me share this interesting thing with you: we have something called Aged Fund and this thing is not happening, we still have aged people dying because they don’t have money to go to the hospital. I’m praying we get the right person this time who understands what musicians actually need...”

Akosua Agyapong rubbished suggestions that a business person should be made MUSIGA president. She said: “Where MUSIGA is concerned, we don’t need that but a musician because. If you’re really going to observe, go and ask questions outside and everywhere, they will tell you that the MUSIGA president needs to be a musician and needs to know something about music.”

Ras Caleb will be competing with veteran highlife singer Bessa Simons for the MUSIGA presidency 2019.
