Guru explains his 'pull back' from active music

Rap star Guru, founder and CEO of NKZ Music, has listed his reasons for being inactive on the music scene.

At the peak of his career, Guru was famed for releasing multiple undisputed hits in a year.

On Wednesday, August 16, 2023, the beloved Hiplife artiste spoke on Class Showbiz with Sammy Flex on CTV.

Sammy broached his inconsistent activity on the Ghana music scene, wondering if it was due to schooling at the University of Ghana (UG), Legon.

“I was battling with my own demons during that period [of absence],” he answered.

“When you have high expectations and you have a vision, and things don’t go how you want, you get a bit slow,” he noted.

“The COVID pandemic also really slowed me a lot,” Guru revealed. “Because it was as though I was stuck in the US.”

He said he had wanted to “find ways” to keep his fans “fulfilled” and “grounded” irrespective of the daunting challenges “but it wasn’t happening”.

Due to this, he added, he was discouraged and reasoned: “No, I’m not doing this anymore.”

“At the same time,” he noted, “the industry was not giving us the due recognition for all the things we were doing.”

This made him feel “there’s something wrong [and] you need to work on it,” he said. The thought made him “pull back”.

These circumstances “led me into investing into other artistes,” Guru said, clarifying: “It was not someone telling me I was failing.”

“You see, I was tired – repetition was giving me the same results and I don’t like that. It was becoming a norm – something was wrong, and I said: ‘Let me move back’.”

The Lapaz Toyota hitmaker also said the artistes he took up to manage unfortunately showed signs of "ignorance".

They were hasty and even though he gave them juicy deals, in some instances "a three-bedroom house, with a home studio, and a car" they were too distracted to work towards success.
