Asafa Powell visits, marks Ghana's 66th Independence Day
Jamaican star athlete Asafa Powell has visited Ghana with his Ghanaian wife Alyshia Miller-Powell.
Mr and Mrs Powell marked Ghana's 66th Independence Day celebration and visited the West African country's former capital, Cape Coast.
There, they met the King of Cape Coast, traditional ruler and the Omanhene of the Oguaa traditional area, Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II, and Alyshia's uncle Nana Amoako Boudu; the Chief of Breman Askiuma Central Regional House of Chiefs.
In their African print clothing, the celebrity couple also toured the historical and youngest of all the castles in Ghana, the Cape Coast Castle.
Asafa Powell informed his fans about the travel via Facebook on Monday, March 6, 2023.
Between June 2005 and May 2008, Asafa set the 100 metres world record twice, with times of 9.77 and 9.74 seconds respectively.
Ghana gained independence from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957. The declaration of independence was made by Ghana's first Prime Minister and President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
Themed ‘Our Unity, Our Strength and Our Purpose’, the 2023 Independence Day celebration took place in the Volta regional capital Ho, where President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo gave an address with the President of the Republic of Guinea Bissau and Chairman of the Economic Community of West Africa State (ECOWAS), Umaro Sissoco Embaló, as a special guest of honour.
