We need a gov’t that will support our operations – Tricycle operators vow support for promising party
The National Union of Tricycle Operators of Ghana (NUTOG) has announced their intention to support any political party that promises to legalise and support their operations.
The union highlighted the significant impact of their activities in reducing unemployment and contributing to the national economy, calling for official recognition and legalisation.
The General Secretary of NUTOG, Hamza Hafiz, clarified that although the NDC Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has promised to legalise the activities of Okada riders, tricycle operators are distinct from Okada riders, and Mr. Mahama's pledge did not pertain to them.
In a media briefing following their meeting in Kumasi, Mr. Hafiz emphasised the need for political parties to engage in dialogue with tricycle operators and to formalise their promises in writing.
“Any political party that is interested to support us to make our job meaningful, because as it stands now it is clear now that government is suffocating in terms of creating jobs.”
“We need a government that will come and support this union to be able to streamline our operations in this country so that we can have our peace from both the local authorities…..”Mr. Hafiz intimated.
The union therefore wants any party that is interested in streamlining the activities of its members to engage them through dialogue and document their promise.
This documentation, he explained, would allow the union to hold the political party accountable if it fails to fulfill its commitment post-election.
