Vice President-elect visits devastated Kantamanto market
Vice President-elect of Ghana, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, visited the site of the tragic fire that engulfed the Kantamanto Market on Saturday, January 4, 2025.
The inferno, which completely destroyed the bustling market, has left thousands of traders devastated and without their livelihoods.
During her visit, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang consoled the grieving traders, acknowledging the hardship they face.
“We know you don’t have much. How much profit do we make? We work and don’t even get enough to eat,” she said, empathizing with their struggles.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also appealed for transparency and swift action in identifying the cause of the fire.
“If you know who did that, and you keep it to yourself, you have done no good.
The government must deal with them,” she urged, encouraging anyone with relevant information to come forward.
The traders expressed gratitude for her presence and compassion, finding solace in her assurances of support and her call for justice.
Many shared their hope for prompt relief and effective measures to prevent future tragedies.
The fire, which reportedly broke out late Thursday night, is suspected to have been caused by either an electrical fault or arson. Investigations are underway, with public pressure mounting for accountability and preventive solutions.
