A groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the National Aquaculture Centre and Commercial Farm Project has taken place at the Amrahia Dairy Farm area near Dodowa today, 9 December 2021 in the Greater Accra Region. 

The project aims to train and equip interested youth, especially university graduates, with entrepreneurial aquaculture production skills.

The centre is expected to provide training for 300 aquaculture entrepreneurs as well as produce 50,000 metric tonnes of fish within five years of operation.

Addressing the participants at the groundbreaking ceremony, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MoFAD), Mavis Hawa Koomson, disclosed that the project includes the establishment of an aquaculture production training centre and commercial farm with facilities such as aquaculture indoor structures, classrooms, accommodation for students and staff, mechanic workshop, packing warehouses and cold storage as well as a storage facility for chemicals and inputs; water reservoir, power station offices, and car park.

She disclosed that the modern aquaculture system is made up of recirculating aquaculture systems, biofloc systems and greenhouse aquaculture systems.
