NPP announces plan to abolish 10% VAT on betting under Bawumia
A Deputy National Communications Director of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr George Krobea Asante, has announced that the next government led by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would abolish the 10% Value-Added Tax (VAT) on betting.
This move, he says, is aimed at alleviating the economic burden on the youth and boosting the economy.
The Ghana Revenue Authority introduced the 10% tax on betting, games, and lottery winnings in 2023, a decision that sparked protests among the youth.
Many argued that, with limited job opportunities, betting has become a crucial source of income for them, and taxing it would only worsen their financial hardships.
Mr George Krobea Asante emphasized that the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Bawumia, is committed to easing the financial strain on Ghanaians by eliminating various taxes, including those on betting, electricity, and spare parts.
He believes that these measures will significantly improve the living standards of the populace.
Mr Krobea Asante urged Ghanaians to support Dr. Bawumia in the upcoming elections, highlighting his proven track record of economic management and a clear vision for the country’s future.
He contrasted this with former President John Mahama’s administration, which he claimed failed to adequately address the economic challenges facing the nation.
According to Krobea Asante, Dr. Bawumia represents the best option for driving economic growth and improving the lives of Ghanaians.
He spoke in an interview on Accra-based Happy FM.
