Komenda Sugar Factory to be come leading producer of sugar in Ghana – Mahama assures people of Central Region

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to operationalizing the Komenda Sugar Factory in the Central Region.
Speaking during a "Thank You" rally in Cape Coast on February 6, 2025, he emphasized the government's determination to advance the project, aiming to establish the Central Region as Ghana's leading sugar producer.
To facilitate this initiative, President Mahama has directed the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry to provide a comprehensive status update on the factory.
He stated, "We are determined to proceed and continue with that project so that the Central Region will become the biggest producer of sugar in Ghana."
The Komenda Sugar Factory, inaugurated in 2016, has faced challenges, including raw material shortages, which have hindered its full operation.
The previous NDC government secured a $35 million loan from the Indian Export-Import Bank, along with an additional $24 million investment, to revitalize the factory.
Despite these efforts, the factory has remained largely non-operational.
In addition to the factory's revival, President Mahama announced plans to upgrade the Cape Coast Hospital's facilities to transform it into a fully equipped teaching hospital for the University of Cape Coast Medical School.
He assured that budgetary provisions would be made in the upcoming 2025 budget to ensure the completion of this project by the end of the year.
These initiatives are part of the government's broader strategy to enhance industrialization and healthcare infrastructure in the Central Region, thereby improving the livelihoods of its residents
