GPRTU backs reintroduction of road tolls, calls for reforms

The National Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Mr Samuel Amoah, has endorsed calls for the reintroduction of road tolls, emphasizing the need for their effective implementation to enhance the transport sector.
Mr. Amoah noted that the primary objective of road tolls is to fund road maintenance, stressing that revenues collected must be managed transparently and accountably to ensure proper infrastructure development.
As part of proposed reforms, he suggested the adoption of an electronic toll collection system to reduce traffic congestion at toll booths across the country.
Additionally, Mr Amoah advocated for the removal of nuisance taxes on fuel products, arguing that this would prevent unnecessary hikes in transportation fares and ease the financial burden on drivers and commuters.
He spoke in an interview with Accra 100.5 FM's Tema correspondent, Rebecca Lartey on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.
