Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has shut down McDan Aviation’s private jet terminal at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) following the company’s failure to settle outstanding debts exceeding $3.9 million.

The debt, as detailed by GACL, stems from unpaid land leases, terminal fees, and rental charges accumulated over several years. Despite a December 25 payment deadline, the amounts remain largely unsettled.

In a statement, GACL stated that McDan Aviation owes $3,995,622.66 and GHS 13,523.37, breaking down the debt into several categories:

Terminal 1 Rent and Fees: $640,232.48

Block Factory, Spintex Road (5.66 acres): $1,160,827.23

Airport Logistics Building, Spintex Road (10.63 acres): $2,168,266.75

Courier Enclave (0.59 acres): $8,140

Cargo Village Offices: $18,156.20 (GHS 13,523.37)

The company is also required to pay a 15% share of gross revenue from September 2022 through November 2024, which remains outstanding.

McDan Aviation has contested portions of the debt, arguing that $2 million relates to a disputed land acquisition currently under litigation.

However, GACL countered, noting that McDan has developed the contested land into commercial properties and benefited from rental proceeds without paying ground rent.

“McDan Company Limited paid GHS 2,000,000 on December 24, 2024, but this falls far short of the total owed,” GACL said in a statement, adding that past payment plans agreed upon in 2020 were defaulted on.

The airport authority emphasised that the closure of McDan’s terminal is part of a broader debt recovery effort, with four other companies at KIA also shuttered for non-payment of dues.
