Akufo-Addo should’ve resigned over free fall of Cedi – Mahama

Mr John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, suggesting that he should have resigned due to the sharp depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.
Speaking at a rally in Nkwabeng in the Nkwanta South District, at the conclusion of his tour of the Bono East Region on Friday, Mr Mahama expressed his frustration over the current exchange rate, which has exceeded 15 cedis to the dollar.
Mr Mahama questioned why President Akufo-Addo would claim that the current economic conditions are better than the single-digit inflation experienced under the previous NDC administration.
"During the Atta Mills administration, the exchange rate was GH¢2 to a dollar.
When you took office, it was GH¢4 to a dollar.
After nearly eight years in power, the exchange rate has now risen to GH¢16 to a dollar," he remarked.
He argued that the President should have resigned when the cedi depreciated to GH¢16 per dollar, emphasizing the difficulty in justifying such an economic situation.
"It is hard to see how GH¢16 to a dollar can be considered better than GH¢4 to a dollar.
Unfortunately, we all find ourselves in this difficult situation," Mr Mahama stated, noting that even the prices of basic goods like cement have skyrocketed.
