The 2024 Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has hailed the significant contribution of the Church to Ghana’s development.

Vice President Bawumia asserts that the church and faith-based organisations could achieve even more with enhanced incentives.

Addressing Christian leaders during a campaign tour in the Western Region on Thursday (2 May), Dr Bawumia described the church as Ghana’s primary development partners.

He emphasised the extensive impact of the church, citing its construction of schools, hospitals, and provision of care for individuals.

Dr Bawumia questioned the role of foreign development partners in comparison, highlighting the church's substantial contributions to Ghana's progress.

He proposed the need to provide incentives to the church and faith-based organisations to encourage further development endeavours.

Calling for closer collaboration between the church and the government, Dr Bawumia advocated for the involvement of churches in the management of schools across the country.

He emphasised the potential benefits of such partnerships in advancing education.

“If you look at the church, for example, the church has done so much for the country. It has built schools [and] hospitals; taking care of people, it’s just phenomenal what the church has done”.

“So, if you are looking for development partners in our country, they are not the foreigners. The development partners; our number one is the church and the faith-based organisations. How many schools do our development partners build for us? How many hospitals do they build?”

“Therefore”, the Vice President pondered, “How can we leverage this and give incentives to the church and to the faith-based organisations for them to do more for us? And this is where I want us to see an enhanced incentive. For our churches and faith-based organisations.”

“And, therefore, I want to see a closer relationship. Let us open and see how best some of the churches can help us in the management of our schools, for example,” Dr Bawumia said.
