Lisa Laryea, 10, begins life-saving journey in South Africa for bone marrow transplant
Lisa Laryea, a brave 10-year-old battling leukaemia, has arrived at the Wits Donald Gordon Hospital in South Africa, where she will soon undergo a life-saving bone marrow transplant.
Lisa’s journey of hope began early Sunday morning when she was escorted from Ridge Hospital in Accra by her family.
An ambulance transported her to Kotoka International Airport, where she bid emotional farewells to well-wishers before boarding her flight.
For her family, this trip represents a critical step towards recovery.
They had exhausted nearly all their resources in a desperate bid to fund her treatment until Ibrahim Mahama, CEO of Engineers & Planners and Dzata Cement, intervened to cover the over $100,000 needed for the specialized procedure.
At the airport, Lisa’s mother, Georgia Golightly Thompson, expressed deep gratitude to Mr. Mahama.
“Lisa is hopeful and excited. She dreams of getting well and becoming a paediatric oncologist.
We’re so grateful to Mr. Ibrahim Mahama,” she shared.![]()
To ensure her safety and comfort on the long journey, Lisa travelled aboard an air ambulance, as recommended by her doctors.
Now in South Africa, she and her family are one step closer to the care that could change her life.
