Ejura MP demands autopsy over suspected police custody death

The Member of Parliament for Ejura Sekyeredumase Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Bawa Braimah, has called for an autopsy to determine the cause of death of a resident, Masawudu, popularly known as Cantona, who allegedly died while in police custody.
The incident has sparked outrage in the Ejura community, with protests escalating into violent demonstrations, including the burning of the local police station.
Cantona was reportedly arrested on suspicion of purchasing a stolen phone and taken to the Ejura Police Station for questioning.
However, he was later pronounced dead at the Ejura Government Hospital.
Family members and residents have accused the police of subjecting Cantona to brutal treatment that may have led to his death, a claim that has intensified calls for justice and accountability.
Bawa Braimah described the incident as “unfortunate” and stressed the need for a thorough investigation to address the community's concerns.
“The community is in pain and confusion. We need to know whether this was a case of police brutality or if there were other factors involved in his death.
An autopsy is essential to bring clarity,” the MP stated.
He also endorsed the family's demand for transparency, noting that understanding the exact cause of death is crucial for restoring trust and ensuring justice.
The deceased’s family has echoed the MP's sentiments, insisting on an autopsy to uncover the truth.
“We want to know what happened to our son. If he was beaten to death or if he died from something else, we have a right to know,” a family member said.
In response to the growing unrest, the Ghana Police Service has pledged full cooperation with the autopsy process and assured the public of a thorough investigation into the incident.
Despite these assurances, tensions remain high in Ejura, with residents demanding immediate action and justice for Cantona.
The MP spoke in an interview on Accra-based Joy FM.
