Akufo-Addo's attitude, utterances give much cause for concern – Mahama
John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed apprehension regarding President Akufo-Addo's demeanor as his presidential term nears its end.
Mr Mahama in a Facebook post stated, "the almost eight years of Nana Addo/Bawumia have done extensive damage to our democracy."
Mr Mahama highlighted concerns over the President's recent actions and statements, noting their potential impact on democratic norms. Specifically, he criticised Akufo-Addo's insistence that chiefs stand up to greet him, seeing it as indicative of a problematic attitude.
Additionally, the former President cited Mr Akufo-Addo's remark that he cannot be succeeded by someone he has previously defeated in elections, which he interpreted as arrogant and undemocratic.
Mr Mahama emphasised that the peaceful transition of power is a fundamental principle of democracy and should not be undermined. He asserted that the determination of Mr Akufo-Addo's successor should be left to the people of Ghana and the will of the Almighty.
Referencing past incidents such as the violence in Ayawaso West Wuogon during the 2020 elections, Mr Mahama warned against potential manipulation of the electoral process. He vowed that Ghanaians and the NDC would resist any attempts to subvert democracy.
Mr Mahama reiterated his call for Nana Akufo-Addo to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and credible election, emphasising that this would be the President's most significant legacy.
