ECG workers walk out during Ashanti Regional Minister's May Day address
On May Day, workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) staged a walkout amidst escalating tensions between the Ashanti Regional Minister and employees of the power distributor.
The protest unfolded just as Simon Osei-Mensah was poised to deliver his speech, marking the global celebration of workers.
The root of the protest lay in the minister's controversial decision to order the arrest of the regional manager of ECG for disconnecting power at the Kumasi Technical University over debt, compounded by his refusal to issue an apology for this action.
Clad in red attire, the ECG workers brandished placards bearing messages urging the politician to refrain from meddling in their operations.
Bismark Adomah, the national vice-chairman of the ECG Senior Staff Workers Union, stressed the urgency for an official apology and the withdrawal of the case.
He emphasized that unless these demands were promptly met, all communication with the minister would be severed.
