New train crashes on test run
Ghana's newly acquired train, intended for operation on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line, has been involved in an accident during a test run in the Asuogyaman District.
The Ministry of Railways Development clarified in a statement dated Thursday, April 18, 2024, that the incident occurred around 12:10 pm on the same day.
According to the Ministry, the train collided with a stationary vehicle positioned directly across the rail track as it approached a curve at Km76+100.
Despite the immediate application of the emergency braking system, the train was unable to come to a complete stop before the collision.
No fatalities were recorded as passengers, drivers, crew, and bystanders are all reported safe.
The Ministry said that the unmanned vehicle was found in a location not designated as an authorised level crossing.
The incident has been reported to the police, and investigations are currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The damaged train has been moved to the workshop for further assessment and necessary repairs.
The government recently procured two contemporary diesel-powered trains from Poland as part of efforts to boost the railway transport system in Ghana.
