Ghana ‘almost’ at the point comedy will be a full-time job – Ghana Comedy Awards CEO
“Forget about years, we’re almost there” at the point where comedy will be the sole or primary employment of some people in Ghana, Dennis Boateng has declared.
The CEO of the Ghana Comedy Awards was speaking on Class 91.3 FM’s morning show, hosted by Prince Benjamin (PB).
“Look at it this way, you [organise] your own comedy special, you fill an auditorium of a 1,000 capacity – just the average, and you’re taking a GHS100 from each person who attends. Let’s take out the freebies and free tickets and things – and you have sponsorships behind you, picture this,” he said.
He buttressed by asking, “How much do you even earn a month at your 9-5? Let’s assume it’s GHS5,000. So GHS60,000 in a year. But just one [entertainment] show can [make you] up to GHS100,000 and GHS200,000. Why would you even worry yourself for a 9-5? You can rely on your show, make a lot of money out of it, and even feed people from it.”
Dennis Boateng noted, even as an occasional master of ceremony (MC), it is common place be “given like GHS5,000 or GHS10,000 for just a three-hour show – it’s a big deal”.
He stressed “if you pay attention to” comedy, “it’ll really take care of your life forever,” inviting his audience to “look at somebody like Basketmouth, AY Live, and all of them”.
“They are not doing a 9-5,” he said, adding they plan and execute “their shows, make their money and they are closed for the year”.
Foreign comic acts are no different compared to Ghanaian acts except for the size of their platforms and support systems, he argued, with a hint of edification, as he dared local acts to carry on “doing amazing” things and even more.
The entrepreneur lauded acts like Parrot Mouth, OB Amponsah, Lekzy De Comic, Clemento Suarez, and their mates for their exploits on international platforms in America, Europe, and Africa. He noted how these acts and others had by dint of hard work beaten off foreign competition in the local market, and seized the day also on social media. The inspiring show of unity among Ghanaian comic acts is another thing he highlighted in gladness.
